A prehistoric timber structure at Richmond Terrace, Whitehall

David Andrews and Nick Merriman

An alder wood baseplate and post set into it were observed during a watching-brief. The baseplate yielded a radiocarbon date of 2540 +/- 70 BP (590 +/- 70 BC uncalibrated), which if reliable would place the structure in the Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age. It would thus supplement a list of prehistoric material from the Westminster area which includes finds of Late Bronze Age metalwork from the Thames, and Iron Age sherds and features from sites at Westminster Abbey and Cromwell Green.
